Dedication to a Master of the Lens: Jim Marshall

Photo News:

It's been another busy few months here in the kennel. We recently headed to Injune and Carnarvon Gorge – for those that would like to read more see the Bluedog Blog. We’ve trotted around the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast and are busy planning a few more jaunts.

As photographers the chance to get out and about for us here at Bluedog is critical and especially so for the tutors. Last month someone asked if tutoring killed our creativity. It’s something we have been chatting about around the kennel and we unanimously agree that it actually fires our creativity! We are always getting out there and trying new techniques, testing products, pushing each other and also learning from each other.

PSQ2010 is on! This year the photography convention will be held in Brisbane from the 12-14th June. Speakers include Peter Eastway, Marcus Bell, Nick Rains and Suzanna Clarke. For more info and to get tickets go to www.psq2010.com

We are pleased to announce some new workshops:
I Landscape 1 and 2 starts in June,

I 'Live in the House' - a challenging photo shoot for photographers of all skill levels with
a nude model in a house in Brisbane (well more like a shell of a house) on Sunday 27th June. The winner for the day will receive a voucher to a Human Form workshop using different lighting methods from studio to natural. We are planning to run this every 3 months and at the end of the year our judge will pick the 'Live in the House Photographer of the Year' who will receive $500.00 worth of photography equipment, accessories and vouchers.

I Two new tours will be released in the next month.
The first is an Outback Tour, the other to the Top End for the Wet plus for those Bluesfest fans we'll be heading back in 2011 but there will only be 6 places available.

I One-on-ones in Brisbane have also now kicked off. These must be booked in advance and we are delivering our full range of workshops plus individually designed sessions.

And there's some new faces in the Bluedog Kennel: Tony Holden, William ‘Bill’ Bullimore, Sheryn Ellis and 16 year old Jake Campbell have joined the team.
Check them out.

The AIPP has announced a new "Enthusiast" category. This membership is available to anyone who is not currently a practicing professional photographer. To be an Enthusiast, AIPP has one requirement for membership. " A LOVE of Photography and the desire to strive for more knowledge in Photography "
Great to see the AIPP embracing the enthusiasts! For more info visit www.aipp.com.au

The Bluedog Facebook Group Weekly Challenge is certainly getting many out there with their cameras in hand each week. The tutors try and get on the page as often as they can to give constructive feedback. Critique is important and we thank our judges for taking time out of their busy schedule each week to do the judging for us.

“Your crits are more important than winning. It's what keeps us inspired and understand better where we went wrong and what we can do to make it better. Never stop the crit no matter how good or bad. We appreciate it. Sometimes we know there is something wrong with a photo but not sure what but put in anyway hoping someone will say something. It's always about learning.   LOVE IT!!!" Tammy and Rod

Photo Planet has a new home. You can find Gerard and the team now at 7 Alicia Street Southport – on the corner of Margaret and Alicia Sts. Same phone number 5531 0303 and same Email pplanet@bigpond.net.au. Thanks to Photo Planet for donating the weekly prize in the Bluedog Facebook Challenge.

Mums and Bubs is now up and running both on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. Min numbers are required so why not grab the kids and join us for a session.

Barry has also announced his new tour date a 17 day photographers' tour visiting Saigon and the Mekong delta area - Southern Vietnam then by boat to Phnom Penh in Cambodia and finishing with several days in Siem Reap visiting the ancient temples of Angkor. Departing 28th December 2010.

Don't forget if there is something special or a date you would like a workshop on, please contact us as we are happy to attempt to do this for you. As our workshop sizes are kept very small, this is often achievable.

Keep those fingers clicking and enjoy your photography!

"I attended your star trail workshop on Saturday night and thought it was fantastic! Here is my 45 minute exposure. I am heading out west and up to Lawn Hill National Park in June for a few weeks with my family, and can't wait to experiment
with all that
I learnt at the course.
Thank you so much

Photo Tip: Using Fluro WB for sunsets

I read a lot about photographers shooting in RAW on Auto white balance mode.

The camera automatically selects the white balance for you, and allows you to focus your efforts on composing and exposing a great image. However, you will most certainly need to correct the white balance later in the digital darkroom.

There is nothing wrong with that however we here at Bluedog like to get it right in camera first. It actually saves us time in post processing, keeps our images integrity, allows us to use the camera as the tool it is, and we believe is the mark of a true professional.

Often when shooting sunrises and sunsets that have red, magenta and purple tinges to them, we will switch our white balance to the fluro white balance mode (symbol of a long rectangle or Fluorescent tube). When on the fluro setting the camera adds more magenta (the opposite of green for fluro).

What's On: Photography Exhibitions

I Timelines Photography + Time -
In this exhibition one aspect of time is considered from a photographic perspective: namely, human life. Works have been selected from the permanent collection both by International and Australian photographers that show an interest in some aspect of lifecycles. Arranged, in part, in a ‘timeline’, these works provoke our understanding of the mediums capacity to suggest the concept of time in ways that may be surprising, moving or even confronting. The exhibition also looks at how photographers have extended a sense of time and duration through images that work in series. Photographers include: Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Bill Brandt, Ruth Maddison, Rod McNicol and Rosemary Laing. Entry Free
Venues & Dates:
NGV International, Photography Gallery Level 3
180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria

I Bipotaim: Stories from the Torres Strait
Powerful black and white photographs and personal accounts from the 1967 referendum will be on display in The Studio from February. Bipotaim: Stories from the Torres Strait documents stories from four communities in the Torres Strait and their recollection of events before and after the referendum. The '67 referendum saw more than 90 per cent of eligible Australians vote “Yes” for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to be included in the national census and gave the Commonwealth Government power to make laws for all Australian people. It is often referred as the first step in the reconciliation process. The Bipotaim (before time) exhibition is on loan from the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island. Entry Free

Bluedog's Eco Tip - Fridge Fury!

Opened up the electricity bill and once again nearly fell over - it seems everything is going up!

Did you know many fridges are one of the biggest consumers of electricity? Most modern fridges will have power saving features and be energy rated. Check the seals regularly around the doors as much cold air can escape from a little crack and therefore making the fridge work harder.

One of the best tips is to make sure you know what you want from the fridge before you open the door. A good thing to teach children at a young age. Beyond that try wrapping a huge chain around the fridge and placing it under lock and key!

Dedication to a Master of the Lens
Jim Marshall (1936-2010 )

Legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall passed away during his sleep at the age of 74 on the 23rd of March 2010.

Known as a notoriously abrasive photographer Marshall helped establish rock-and-roll's public image with his intimate and iconic portraits of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Johnny Cash and many others. His pictures of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival and Johnny Cash's middle finger salute at San Quentin have become iconic.

Marshall was due to take part at an event at New York's Morrison Hotel Gallery on March 24, the show was instead a memorial of his work.

Collaborating with artists on over 500 album covers, Marshall worked late into his life, taking portraits of people like John Mayer, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz and Velvet Revolver.

"He was quick and relentless, wading in with his quiet little Leica and capturing the essence of the person and the moment," said Diltz, who is also a music photographer. "He was the guru of us all. Marshall refused to give stage directions and preferred to shoot with available light. His only requirement was non-negotiable: unfettered access to his subjects, a condition he considered essential for the documentary style he favoured. Apparently he balked when entertainer Barbra Streisand attempted to set limits during a shoot. He said he wound up swearing at Streisand, who was aghast, and then walking out. Despite his impatience and curmudgeonliness, Mr. Marshall befriended many of the people who agreed to his terms. In 1966, he was the only photographer allowed backstage at San Francisco's Candlestick Park at what turned out to be one of the Beatles' last full-scale public performances.

James Joseph Marshall was born in Chicago on Feb. 3, 1936, and grew up in San Francisco. While he carted around a Kodak Brownie as a kid, it was not until junior high, when a photographer snapped a clear shot of him crossing the finish line at the end of a footrace, that Marshall became mesmerized by the art form.
Published five books during his life, including 2009's Trust.

Marshall was passionate about his work up until the end, saying: "I have no kids, my photographs are my children."

Janis Joplin in 1968 sprawled on a couch backstage with a bottle of Southern Comfort and appearing, at the height of her fame, to be as lost and lonely as a little girl.

"Some people said I shouldn't have published that picture, "Marshall said in 2005. "But Janis said, 'Hey, that's a great shot because it's how it is sometimes. Lousy.'"
