The winter months have been an exciting time here at the kennel. We just love the colours that come through with the autumnal colours and the fantastic clear winter mornings. Definitely a favourite time for photography, even if it can mean a few chilly mornings as we wait for that perfect sunrise. And the BIG news is: After much searching Bluedog has found a spot in Brisbane that will serve as the new site for Bluedog Classes. We are scheduling the first Brisbane Classes into the August 2010 calendar! There’s a Bluedog class coming to a suburb near you. Degree South : War Photography Exhibition certainly held plenty of inspiration and evoked plenty of strong emotions from those lucky enough to catch it at the Power House here in Brisbane. The work that war photographers do, not only in taking and presenting images but also in helping those on the ground, serve to remind us of how lucky we are living in such a comparatively safe country here in Australia. The tutors from Bluedog who went in for a look certainly felt the power of the images and the stories that went with them. Danielle and Augustine each headed up to Hughenden in Queenslands north-west. Danielle went up to host a weekend of workshops for the local photography enthusiasts and Augustine followed a couple of weeks later to judge the photographs in the local show. Both would agree that the people of Hughenden sure do know how to make a person feel welcome. The Bluedog Blog is certainly running hot with stories of Bluedog exploits and from the feedback we have been getting here at the kennel it seems to tickle a few funny bones as well. As we all know, photography is supposed to be fun and we are certainly looking to keep it that way when we fill the next blog instalment.

Photo Tip: Cool Photography AppsIn this age where every second person seems to either have an iphone or is looking to get one I thought it would be appropriate to have a look at one of the handiest iphone apps I have found in ages – Photocalc. I have searched and downloaded quite a few apps for photography onto my iphone and would have to say this is one of the best. Primarily Photocalc has 4 main widgets that make photography calculations a snap. The depth of field calculator allows you to enter the focal length, aperture and subject distance for your specific camera and it will calculate the near and far limits of your zone of sharp focus, the total depth of field, hyperfocal distance and the size of the circles of confusion. Very handy when you are wanting to ensure you have the correct aperture to ensure all of your elements are in focus. There is also a handy sunrise tool that uses your location and supplies the times for sunrise, solar noon, sunset and even gives the hours of twilight for that “magic hour” photography we all love so much. The exposure reciprocation tool takes the 3 main elements of good exposure (aperture, ISO and shutter speed) and by locking one of these to get the desired affect, the tool will give you alternative options for the other 2 to ensure you maintain good exposure. Cleverly they have also included a tool that works much the same as the exposure tool but includes flash to the mix giving details of the settings so that you have exposed correctly for flash photography. Not only are all of these handy tools included but there is also a reference section that covers additional photographic gems like the sunny F16 rule and a glossary of photographic terms. All in all I’d have to say that this is a dynamic tool that definitely constitutes the best $3.99 I have yet spent on my photography. For those out there that have a passion for DSLR photography and have a phone that will take apps I would highly recommend this small but mighty investment.

We have been trialling the SPRINT PRO II GM over the past few months and are happy to say we have added it to our travel arsenal! Designed to travel, the SPRINT PRO II GM is a compact tripod with 4 legs sections to collapse down to 480mm and weighs just 890grams. We are so impressed with this mighty little tripod that we are now stocking it through CR Kennedy for purchase at Bluedog Workshops.

"THOSE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO TAKE ACTION - HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE ACTION"..... Benjamin Franklin To this end, Arts Freedom Australia (AFA) will hold a rally near Campbells Cove on Sydney Harbour on Sunday, August 29th between 10am and 12 noon to reinforce its message. “We need to make the Australian public aware of this threat to our freedoms,” Mr Duncan said. This issue has become such a force of concern that within the PSQ2010 convention Earle Bridger from Queensland College of Art spoke for over an hour on the rights of photographers and how we actually still have them (although often people in positions of authority feel that this is not the case). Indeed, in Brisbane alone five photography students have been arrested in the last two years while pursuing street photography projects for their assignments. Recently a prominent Australian photographer was stopped on the streets of Cairns where he was taking some shots and informed that to continue to take his shots he had to pay the council a fee. The images this person takes are used in both national and international media campaigns and one should question the reasoning beyond money garnering for such ridiculous impositions. Any photographer deemed to be a professional is no longer allowed to shoot Uluru whereas an amateur can take as many shots as they please. Professional photographers have to pay a fee to take photographs in our National Parks. Where will it end? How many of you know that in Queensland it is perfectly legal to photograph on the beach? How many of you out there have been approached and told you cannot? The time has come to stand up and be counted and through the website listed above people can find others who are hoping for rallies in their own cities. I know that in Brisbane the Brisbane Camera Group is looking for interested people. Contact Julie through info@brisbanecameragroup.org.au
